Everyone needs a good flash head. This is one.
By Kirk Tuck
I spent a few weeks shooting outdoors and trying to overpower the sun with a flash in a softbox. Pretty hard to do with a shoe mount flash unless you are inches away from your subject. But pretty easy to do if you happen to own an Elinchrom Ranger RX AS system. It's a 1100 watt seconds at full power and it's totally battery powered so you can take it anywhere. The pack and head work great but the most delicate thing in the whole system is probably the flash tube. Over the course of the project, as I came to depend more and more on the light kit I started to get a bit paranoid because I didn't have a back up head for the system. So I bought a second one. The heads are lightweight so they are easy to mount on booms and high stands. They accept the standard Elinchrom speed rings for softboxes and Octabanks. They have a small modeling light. The umbrella hole is 7mm so you need to make sure you get umbrellas with skinnier shafts than you might be used to. You need the 7mm shaft. The head I already have worked great in incredibly hot situations, in high humidity and even in a little surprise rain (although shooting near water or in the rain is NOT recommended. The head never overheated in spite of me shooting twenty or thirty full power pops in a row as fast as the box could recycle. The head covers work well with the heads bayonet mounting system. All in all it's a great product. I wish it had a cooling fan for long time use in softboxes but that would probably eat up battery power too quickly. Now that I have a second head I have the perfect location portrait kit. Main light and background light. Some cards for fill. Backup complete. Happy photographer. Paranoia all gone.Wanna know more about lighting on location? Great power

I bought this system to work with my Ranger RX system. I took it out and it provided amazing quality light out on location. The cable it came with was definitely long enough for my use (I suspended it on an avenger boom off of an avenger c-stand).
