Good for the Price

This is a heavy-duty bar. The black finish scratches off easily, but I figured it would and didn't care because of the price. The knurling is not too aggressive, so it won't tear up your hands, but there's enough depth for effective grip. Unlike some of the other reviewers, my bar was not full of oil. I suppose it has a light residue, but nothing worth worrying over. It'll wear off with use. I have some observations specifically as a powerlifter. On the plus side, the bar has almost no flex, even with over 400 lbs on it. So when you're lifting the weight, you're lifting all of it from the start. But I have two negative comments: First, the bar seems a little thicker than IPF regulations. I don't have an IPF bar at my house to compare it to, and it may be an illusion because of the color, but it just seems a little thicker. I suppose they did this to up the weight-rating. I won't know for sure until I try to max deadlift with it. Second, there is no center knurling on this bar. I like having a center knurling for squats. It makes me feel safer - so the bar has less opportunity for slipping. It's a personal preference, and it just means I'll have to chalk up whenever I'm squatting. Overall, for the price, I would recommend it as a solid addition to any home gym.

Good buy

I did quite a bit of research on barbells, since I'm frugal. I elected this bar because it fit my needs for powerlifting and bodybuilding (squats, bench, dead lifts, presses, etc), it can support more than the weight that I need it to (400-500 squat, 320-365 bench, 500-600 deadlift), I don't do any Olympic lifts (won't be throwing the bar around). The end of the bar is capped, no Allen wrench bolt, which is higher quality. There was no negative feedback on this bar and it seemed more quality and reliable than Cap's lower end product. My thought was - there was no way I was spending more than $165 on a bar (rogue, etc) and I am really glad I did not. The bar was shipped timely, it's black, maybe a bit thicker than my other bar, a bit oily - I wiped it down, no big deal. I've been able to do one HEAVY squat - leg workout so far and it was awesome, tomorrow is shoulders. The only con to me is that the hand placement rings are further outside and wider than my previous bar but i will adapt. And, since my squat/bench rack is in a bit of a dark room, it's tough for me to see the rings since the bar is black. Some lighting will solve this problem though. If I was sure the lower end steel model was 45 lbs, I would've gotten it, but someone complained about the weight on that one. This bar is 45 lbs. Good bar, I recommend it - coming from an analytical, cheap natured, serious trainer.

Cap 1500lb Test Bar

The best bang for your buck you can find. It's heavy duty. Deadlifted 405lbs last week and the bar didn't even flinch. It's black, so yes if you hit it on metal or use it on concrete it might chip, but I didn't buy it cuz it looks good (although it does). It has surprisingly good swivel too. I had planned to buy a separate bar for cleans and snatches, but this one works just fine. You will have trouble finding this quality for this kind of price($180 shipped). And I received it 5 days after i ordered, just an added bonus.
