ALMOST everything you need to start with cloth diapers.

We used this kit for five months and found that it contains ALMOST everything you need to get started with cloth diapers and works well, especially while baby is in the sweet spot in the middle of the size range. My sister got this kit for her first baby, but passed it on to us virtually unused, so a caveat of this review is that our 8-15 pound kit version is 3 years old. However, it looks like since then they have only added products (balm, wet bag, fleece liners), and made the velcro tabs on the superwhisper wraps larger (a handy improvement). My sister tried the kit, but found that the diaper covers were not a good fit for her long, lean baby, so she gave up on it. We also have a long, lean baby and started using the kit when he was about 9 pounds. While the diapers/covers were very bulky on him at first, for the majority of its life cycle this kit has been great - with a few amendments I'll note below. (We also use a Nature Babycare brand disposable once per day after infant massage so as to not get oil on our cloth diapers, and so baby can have some less encumbered exercise time out of the big cloth diaper.) In the Amazon Product Description they say the baby size (15-30 lbs) comes with 18 prefolds, 4 diaper covers (the 2 whisper wraps and 2 super brites), and various accessories. I went to the Bummis' site to see what now comes in the infant size (8-15 lbs): 24 prefolds, 6 diaper covers, and various other accessories. Based on our experience, I would recommend getting a few other essentials to complement this kit. I would recommend you have at least 36 prefolds or you might likely be doing diaper laundry every day. I would augment the prefolds in the kit with a different brand, like OsoCozy 6 Pack Prefolds Unbleached Cloth Diapers, Size 2, which are not organic and therefore more economical, but otherwise very comparable. This way you have another brand under your belt for comparison when it's time to order the next size up. Also, breast fed babies go through phases of frequent, explosive bowel movements and no matter how well we folded the diaper to form the poo pocket, poo always seemed to escape the prefold and soil the diaper cover. (This was no longer an issue once we introduced solid food.) Thankfully it almost never escaped the diaper cover to soil his clothes, which is a huge advantage over disposables. Hence, I would recommend getting two extra diaper covers so you do not run out of clean ones between laundry cycles, and again I recommend trying a different brand. We also have Thirsties Duo Wrap Snap, Blackbird, Size One (6-18 lbs) diaper covers and I like that the rise on them has adjustable snaps (both Bummis and Thirsties have adjustable waistbands - Bummis uses velcro and Thirsties Duo SNAP uses snaps). Next, as another reviewer mentioned, we use Snappi Cloth Diaper Fasteners - Pack of 3 (Mint color mix) to keep the prefolds together. They revolutionized our cloth experience and I think they are a must have that is missing from this kit. Finally, another must have that is missing from the kit is a set of doublers. I cannot speak to what the kit's fleece liners are like as our old kit did not come with them, but in my experience "liners" do not provide the same absorbency potential as doublers, and based on the Bummis web site info. these liners are made of polyester. We tried Thirsties Hemp Inserts 2 Pack, Large 18-40 lbs (they come in different sizes) and liked them a lot until we found BabyKicks 3 Pack Joey-Bunz Premium, Large (also come in 3 sizes) hemp & organic, ubleached cotton doublers - our new favorites. They add some bulk, but our baby doesn't mind while he is sleeping, and once we didn't have to wake and feed every few hours we found that they kept him dry all night. Since Bummis bills the kit as "everything you need to start using cloth diapers now" I only give it 4 stars because I think you also need the things I recommend adding to it, but I do highly recommend the kit nonetheless. I hope these suggestions are helpful to other parents trying cloth for the first time, and to friends/family thinking of buying the kit for loved ones.After 5 months of daily use our Bummis prefolds and diaper covers are still in really good shape, a good testament to the quality and durability of this product. There are some signs of wear (a few of our Bummis prefolds have light stains, and most have a few threads hanging off the edges, and the diaper covers have gotten softer), but they smell fresh and clean. (Check out Diaper Pin's "How tos/FAQs" page for useful tips on laundering cloth diapers. We use their washing instructions and add 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar into the 3rd step, a.k.a. rinse, using a Downy Ball. After the transition to solid foods, plus some comfort and night nursing, we do laundry every other day and started adding 1 1/2 cups vinegar to the 1st step, a.k.a. cold water wash.) Now that our little guy has outgrown it, I am about to box our Bummis starter kit, with my added essentials, back up to save for using in the future with our next little one.

A great way to start with cloth

I had never even seen a baby in cloth diapers before, but I wanted to start, so I ordered this kit. It has 36 unbleached prefolds, 6 diaper covers, 2 rolls of flushable liners, and an instruction book. The book is great - shows you step by step what you need to do to wash, use, and store the dirty diapers. You have to wash the prefold diapers 3 times before using - they get a lot smaller and softer as they go through the wash and dry cycles. I've been so happy with their absorbancy, ease of use, and cost. Even my husband was pleasantly surprised by how easy the switch was (this is our 3rd child and the first 2 were all disposables). When you think of a pack of diapers costing $20, this kit is pretty cheap. We may "upgrade" to the all-in-one diapers as our newborn gets larger and outgrows the covers(she's only 8 weeks old and 11 lbs.), but for the next couple of months, this is all we need. I would recommend them for anyone thinking of moving to cloth to "go green" and save some money.

Excellent kit

This is a great kit for those wanting to cloth diaper. I had bought this having no clue what I was looking for and was very pleased. I have used these from the beginning and are well loved. I did find that 36 prefolds is MORE than enough. I wash every 2-3 days and never ran out of prefolds or covers for my baby. I did however, purchase some thirsties covers, so I could have a variety of colors! The prefolds are also unbleached indian prefolds and super soft and fluffy!!Now that my LO is about to outgrow these, I have been using the prefolds inside the BG and fuzzi bunz diapers as inserts, especially overnight with no added bulkiness. These prefolds have gotten plenty of use and more than paid for themselves!Also do practice a variety of folds. The fold in the Bummis directions is designed more for a girl with the added absorbancy in the middle. For a boy you want to fold up the front and do an angel wing fold to have more absorbancy in the front. I have noticed when I do the fold in the directions teh diapers are soaked very quickly and when I do teh angel fold they aren't soaked through...so do practice.
