Design Story
To create the Mirra chair, Herman Miller teamed with Studio 7.5, a German design firm. Composed of five designers--Claudia Plikat, Burkhard Schmitz, Nicolai Neubert, Carola Zwick, and Roland Zwick--Studio 7.5 has been involved for over 10 years in the design and development of products that improve the way people work. They consider themselves 'the grandchildren of the Eameses' and, like those pioneering designers, they are experts at observing how workers interact with their environments and finding ways to make that interaction more natural. Sharing a genuine passion for seating, they know seating as a science and work to bring it to another level. Rather than relying on any individual in the firm, Studio 7.5 works as a team, without titles or hierarchy. The Mirra chair is a product of their collective imagination, talent, and persistence--along with a willingness to break the mold in order to create a chair that sets a new standard for comfort, fit, balanced ride, and visual refinement in its price range. Studio 7.5 envisioned a chair that reacts to what people do. Part of the concept was to make the chair like a second skin, like a shadow of the sitter. From this concept, Mirra's passive adjustability was born. From the TriFlex back to the AireWeave seat suspension to the Harmonic tilt, Mirra does just what Studio 7.5 worked to achieve: Just sit on it, and it fits. There are only a few adjustment controls, and they are designed to be very intuitive. This Is Most Definitely The Chair For You - Believe It!

I am writing to let you know if you're still on the fence about this design beauty, this is definitely the chair for you and you can believe the hype.I have sat in the Aeron chair, also by Herman Miller as you probably know, for a number of years prior to buying a Mirra for my use at home, and am familiar with how amazingly beneficial a completely comfortable, customizable sitting experience can be. Although I originally intended to purchase a loaded Aeron for my home office, I decided ultimately on the Mirra because of its updated modern look.Of course, the first thing I did was sit-test each chair back to back at my local Room&Board store which has the same pricing for this chair as Amazon but without the long wait for delivery. I found the Mirra chair to be just as comfortable, if not more so (which in my opinion it is) as the Aeron, and as an added bonus it's less expensive (although if you're considering chairs in this price range this probably isn't such a concern for you).Some people have complained to Herman Miller about the back of the chair being too ridgid, but I'm betting this could simply be because they haven't taken the time to adjust their chair properly as recommended in the videos on the HM page for this chair and in the manual accompanying the chair (and adjusting the chair is a very simple and fast process). I find the back infinitely comfortable, and in fact even more so than the Aeron because of the additional support. It flexes and moves with you, changing shape as you change position. I was truly amazed when I experienced this, and then saw my partner sit in the chair and observed how it moved with him. However, I definitely feel you ought to sit in this chair first before you purchase one, just to be absolutely certain.I have owned my beloved Mirra (Graphite on Graphite to be match-safe for future decorating schemes) inside of a week now, and every time I sit in it I feel compelled to sigh with the sheer joy of luxuriating in comfort. I upgraded to this chair after owning a Herman Miller Caper desk chair Multi-Task Caper Task Chair by Herman Miller - Black on Black w/ Molded Plastic Seat for a couple of years. That chair was also comfortable, but arguably a waste of money for me as I ended up having the seat back crack on me twice after about twelve months of use each time. Fortunately, Room&Board and I were able to negotiate their taking back that chair and crediting me towards the price of my Mirra (the chair I should've just bought in the first place).With many of the same color options as the Aeron and all the same features that have been updated in almost every case since the Aeron's original design, I'm thinking the Mirra is well on its way to becoming the next ubiquitous office chair. As I've said, if you're still on the fence, jump down and test/buy yours today -- you won't regret it.

Good chair, Bad Price!

I read about the Herman Miller Mirra chair while reading Jeff Atwood's blog a while ago. It seemed nice but it was pretty expensive so I forgot about. Eventually I got tired of sitting on my current chair. So, after reading a few more reviews I decided to purchase the Mirra chair.In my research I found out that Herman Miller has two yearly sales in which it cuts the price of if its furniture by 15%. The sales appear to occur at the beginning of June and around Christmas. I purchased a new fully adjustable Mirra chair with the tilt limiter and forward tilt during one of those sales from Amazon for $679. I highly recommend waiting for a sale if you are thinking of purchasing a Herman Miller chair, the regular price on the chair is $799 so you'll save over $100 by waiting a few months.Personal ImpressionI received the chair a couple days after I ordered it. it comes in a huge box that weighs around 50lbs. It comes almost fully assembled, the only assembly required is to attach the back to the base using two bolts. One small annoyance is that you need a socket wrench to properly install the bolts - the bolts don't tighten well enough and the back starts to wiggle if you use a monkey wrench like first I did.The Mirra has a suspended mesh bottom that supports the user very well. It has a slight give and molds to the shape of your bottom instead of forcing your bottom flat like a regular chair. The arms are soft and filled with a kind of a gel and are very comfortable unlike the hard or soft plastic most other chair use. In addition to adjusting up and down, the armrests also twist inward as well as move in and out.The material that comprises the back is very flexible. Unlike a traditional chair that usually has a hard or soft back, the Mirra's back is flexible and molds to your back. In addition, the adjustable lumbar support lets you target the small of your back.The recline feature is very well built. As advertised, the seat tilts along with the back. However, unlike cheaper chairs where the back and seat feel bolted together, the Mirra seat tilts back at a different rate than the back so your whole body feels supported. The recline is so comfortable that I even like to relax in the chair. The tilt tensioner and limiter lets you dial the tilt to whatever you feel like for that day!One disappointment is the forward tilt feature. From the description you would imagine that the seat and back would tilt forward and support your body when you leaned forward but that is not the case. The forward tilt is just that - it is a lever that tilts the seat forward at a set angle and is not adjustable. It actually ends up being uncomfortable and is a useless feature.AnnoyancesThe chair has a several annoyances that I would not expect on a product at this price. The armrests wiggle within the in-out setting you chose even under light pressure. I would expect the mechanism to move the armrests in and out to hold the arms tighter. The arms don't always lock at the height you select, the steps for the locking mechanism need to be tighter. In addition, the armrests don't move in and out very smoothly, it takes a disproportionate amount of force to get them moving and you have a tendency to slam the armrest because of the force you use. Overall, once the chair is adjusted to your workspace these annoyances fade and you you don't notice them as much.ConclusionOverall, I like the Mirra. It is a great improvement over my Ikea Verksam chair. The Mirra is very comfortable and is highly adjustable. I can work in it for hours and thanks to the recline features is a great chair to relax in. Great chair, but some don't like the back

I've had my Mirra for over 3 years now and I love it. The chair arms are particularly nice - they are the perfect shape and very adjustable, with plenty of padding (some other chair arms tend to be too rectangular with uncomfortable edges). The chair bottom is basically identical to the more expensive Aeron and feels just the same to me; easy on the legs, perfect amount of support and keeps you cool. Also, the adjustments on this chair are very easy to use, which is a big improvement over the Aeron.I find the chair back to be very comfortable and it provides great adjustable lower-back support. However, I've talked to some people who found its rigidity uncomfortable, so I would try sitting in this before buying it as the back seems to be a love it or hate it issue.Summary: Great chair, plenty of adjustments, great value, very durable so far (after 3+ years)
