I don't even know where to start...Nearly three years after I came home from work and found out that I was the not-so-proud owner of a $2000 vacuum I'm still looking for reasons to justify my wife's purchase.It is a top quality vacuum cleaner, though. I still look at it sometimes and think "Wow. That's a well-made piece of machinery." Reflecting on the quality is very soothing. It's all aluminum with a few high quality plastic parts. It's more durable and better performing than any vacuum used by professional house cleaners--and my wife actually is a professional ouse cleaner. But it's way to heavy and too expensive for any company to consider equipping there workers with.It's like another one of my professsional grade power tools--and heavier than most of them. But this is not a problem for a small woman who only has to roll it around the house without repeatedly lifting it up, especially since it has a built in propulsion system to do the pushing and pulling for you. It feels sturdy and substantial, and the shampooer attachment works great.My wife shampoos the carpets with it and wow what a difference. We have toddlers and dogs, and our carpets take a beating. I'm not familiar with all the attachemnts, but it looks like quite a project when my wife does the shampooing. The results are undeniable, though.It's also great for restoring stinky smoker's mattresses...Our friend gave us a free queen sized pillow top that was hardly used, but it smelled like cigarettes and stunk up the rear half of the house. I removed the odor by covering the mattress with a layer of carpet fresh powder and let it stand for a day or two with the bedroom door shut. Then I vacuumed it all up. worked great.Update 7-29-2012: Kirby is still going strong. Aftermarket Hepa bags work just fine. Only had to replace a belt once. with the self propulsion system, even my 6 year old can use it.

I think this is the greatest vacuum ever made! It is heavy and solidly built. It is great for cleaning the edges of a room. It can get the edges better than a regular vacuum with a hose can. I have seen debris travel from 6 inches away to be sucked up into the vacuum. It is very powerful.

I was working in motels long ago as a teenage job, and Kirby was pretty much all was used. They are strong, robust, and easy to clean and maintain. The only weak link has always been that rubber ring. Things just haven't changed for decades!Certainly no need to. I was one of those introduced by neighborhood sales, who promptly took a brand new Ultimate G and went on my bed and vacuumed out bunch of dusts, hairs, and tons of dark stuff and probably lots of dust mites. I was certainly resold, especially this model includes the equivalent of the power steering in your car! I think that's the key. Trying to vacuum with low setting on a tall carpet means you need to build very strong muscles and stamina to move the vacuum. But with the "Drive" mode ("D" button depressed), you can let the vacuum power drive itself with lifting just couple of fingers to guide the machine - literally! That's why it can remove more stuff from the carpet than most if not everything on the market. Just make sure you carry few rubber rings at all times as that's the first (and only thing) that gives and require replacement (other than the bag).The cleaner is made out of steel (I think) and the quality is just as strong and robust as I ever remembered back in 1980s using it to vacuum 50+ rooms. We have deep carpets and kids, so this does the job every time.The (dry) shampoo equipment is a nice attachment. We used quite a few times and saved us a lot of money. The pros may have some backup methods for stubborn stains, but for regular cleaning it does equally good job. But if you used with during summer in at least 80 degree outside temperature and lower humidity (e.g., California), then the extra benefit is carpet dries sometime in 1 - 2 hours!Given the reconditioned units are so cheap, I would recommend it to any household. The core components are all made out of steel so the casing and core components should not get warped or cracked.If you get salesman / saleswomen at the door, just negotiate down. Just remember that you are paying extra for the entertainment value and a brand new vacuum!
