I bought a set of these for my living space and receive many compliments. The larger base is visually appealing. The construction is normal for lamps of this type, being resin for the base and some sort of plastic for the shade. This lamp share the fault of most of these mission style lamps that the bottom of the bulb is visible when you are sitting even with the lamp's height, especially if you use a larger diameter bulb, such as a CFL. I bent the rods leading to the light socket upwards slightly to compensate for this satisfactorily, but I am sure the manufacturer would not recommend doing this..
