1. The Acrylic discs are 25% thicker on average, measuring 2.8mm versus the standard 2.2mm. This reduces wobble, and increases brush contact time.

Every time you here the `popping' noise it makes a clearly visible spark, however, my camera did not pick up all of them. Overall this is a pretty good product, I have used many different wimshurst machines and this one holds its own easily against the more expensive ones. There are a few things missing, but regular people would not really care about those anyway.Pros:Inexpensive wimshurst machine (it would cost nearly this much in supplies to make one at home).Connections for accessories built in, and many accessories are out there.Fairly simple build for maintenance (I recommend taking pictures of your configuration before servicing so you can put it back together exactly the same).Fun and simple device that everyone seems to love trying.Cons:The leyden jars are permanently connected, on other models you can actually disconnect them. This can be useful for science teachers to show connections with the added capacitance. Without the leyden jars the sparks seen are nearly invisible and therefore not good for anyone not looking to teach it. Many more expensive models have this ability, but even I do not want to pay another $100 for it.O-rings can dry out and break (mine lasted about a year with no special care), but this happens to all of the wimshursts I have seen.Taking it apart to service is not terribly difficult, but it is not exactly streamlined either.At 4:50 I talk about the educational aspects of the device and how it works (in general). I apologise for pronouncing it [V]imshurst when it is actually [W]imshurst, many people use the former thinking it was named after a German scientist when actually it is named for British James Wimshurst. I recommend storing it with the discharge arms touching to prevent charging.

After unboxing, I read the one-page sheet with instructions about safety, assembly and use. Then I assembled the device (two belts and the crank) and the sparks started flashing immediately. It was almost a bit disappointing that there was so few things to do for me to get this machine running. It simply works out of the box.What I like especially about this machine is that it is so easy to see how the parts are supposed to work together. My hope is that I can build my own machine with my own parts and get it working too. With the inspiration from the machine that I bought, this should be fun to do.

I've seen wimshurst machines online and wanted one ever since. The blue spark of electricity is just fascinating for some reason. After getting this one for christmas, I was really expecting to play with it a few times and then put it on a shelf and then maybe use it again as people asked about it, but this is not the case. It is just so much more interesting in person. The spark is very bright and crack when it jumps is loud. Video doesn't do it justice, and every time I pass by it, I have to give it a spin. It gets even better in the dark, as you can see electricity jumping around on different parts of the machine.
