5Good prop, good price
By Michael Bonner
Bought this to replace an OEM Mercruiser 3-blade Black Max (14.5x19) on a 1998 Chapparal 2130SS with a standard Chevy small-block V8 engine, as the 'ole prop had seen better days thanks to many trips onto the beach as well as several submerged logs in the Chesapeake Bay. Plus, it had always seemed to run a bit high on the RPM's with the OEM prop, at WOT the engine would bounce off the rev limiter. After much research on Chaparral's website, Mercury's website, and various general boating resource websites, I decided on a 4 blade replacement for better economy in the mid-range, and went up 1 step in pitch. Combined with the switch from the 3-blade to the 4-blade, the +1 step in pitch was perfect, now WOT hits right at the specified peak RPM with no bouncing off the rev limiter. Plus, I noticed a significant improvement in the mid-range power in that I am getting on plane a couple knots sooner, plus I can maintain a given speed at a lower RPM. I don't do any water skiing so hole shot wasn't a big concern, but the increased performance is great for the wallet! Top end still maxes out at about the same as well.

this prop was a lot better than the 3 blade for hole shot but go stainless. to much flex in aluminum.

5Great prop !
By P. Corson
I went from a 3-blade, 23 pitch to this 4-blade, 20 pitch to match the kind of cruising we do on local waters. There's always some chop out there, so the 50mph top speed of our boat was seldom available, at least with any margin of comfort & safety. The 4-blade and lower pitch combine to put the best part of the engine's power band at a slower forward speed instead of all at wide open throttle. This means being able to get up on plane sooner from a standstill, and the 4 blade brings a more stable sense of steering. As to the Mercury brand, I have found their quality top notch. This prop is no exception, right down to the thickness of the paint on the aluminum, much better than aftermarket varieties. NOTE: the bolt retainer on the center hub is NOT the "crown" multi-tab benddown as shown in the images listed, but a newer type. If you keep a spare retainer, you may need to change it out as well. They are not compatible.
