Good microscope for the price
By Hugh Grant
I paid around $520 for this microscope. It is decent and the built in lighting helps. I'm also glad it came with a spare lamp bulb, dust cover, and five prepared slides. The images are clear using the 10x and 15x eyepieces --- however at 600x, things start to get blurry but still decent ---at 1500x - forget it, unless I'm using this thing wrong (I am new to using a microscope), it is too blurry to really make things out. Sometimes I can make things out a bit, but things are barely visible at this level. It is a sturdy microscope and seems relatively easy to use. - Oh one of the five prepared slides it came with was broken; I didn't bother to ask for a new one. This is my first microscope that I bought for personal research as a hobbyist, so I don't have anything to compare with but have been happy with it so far.

Excellent microscope for the serious amateur
By Goopi Bagha
I bought this microscope for my middle schooler and it has worked out really well so far. The body of the microscope is very sturdy and fairly heavy (as it should be), so it is better for an adult to set it up in a permanent place. Setting up the objective lenses and the eyepiece is simple but again requires an adult. Once set up, it is a delight to use. All controls operate smoothly: there are knobs for coarse and fine focus and the motion of the stage can be controlled in the horizontal plane. The binocular eyepiece works really well and is less tiring on the eyes. Useful tip: We found that it is better to keep our eyes about half a centimeter away from the eyepiece lenses while adjusting the distance between them. The glass optics makes a huge difference compared to cheaper microscopes in terms of image quality. The images are sharp and crisp at all magnifications except the highest one. However, that is because the objective must come in contact with the specimen through a special oil droplet (oil supplied with the kit) and we haven't quite mastered this technique yet.
