A fashionable Batgirl doll for your collection
By barbecue17
Primarily I collect action figures and Legos. I have a few 1/6th scale figures and statues, but typically I prefer smaller, more articulated toys. There's one character, however, that I collect in any form: Statues, action figures, dolls, busts, if it represents Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, I'm going to snap it up. I love Batgirl! Besides just her very cool appearance I'm also quite the fan of the character and the many interesting character arcs she's been through. All is that to say that this is the first time I've ever bought a Tonner doll. Unlike Hot Toys, Enterbay, and Sideshow products, this figure is not an action figure on steroids but more like a traditional fashion doll. She's 18 inches tall, much taller than usual 1/6th figures, and has far more doll like qualities to her. Its a beautiful piece, however, and has been a welcome addition to my Batgirl collection. Here's a brief look at Batgirl:The Facts:Articulation- Hinged knees, ball jointed hips, swivel waist, lateral hinged mid torso joint, ball jointed shoulders, peg/post elbows, peg/post wrists, ball jointed head.Accessories- Bodysuit, metal display rod, display base, boots, gloves, belt w/ metal buckle, combined cloth cape with rubber cowl. The positives:*Since this is a rather expensive doll, I have quite a bit to say. First, The head is really nicely done. Barbara Gordon has been portrayed so many ways so its not like there is any one specific way to portray her. She has a quite beautiful face, doll like face with real rooted hair. Its a brilliant, fiery red with a bit of curl. Whether posing Barbara with or without the cowl, she has quite a nice portrait. This doesn't relate to the head sculpt, but she does have painted finge and toe nails, too, which I wasn't expecting.*Many parts of the outfit are very nice. I love the satiny material used for the cape, as it gives it some nice weight and has a shine to it. The boots are really well done as well. They're made of what appear to be a yellow pleather material and have real working zippers in the back. The belt is pretty average but the metal belt buckle (a bat emblem, of course) really is quite nice. Everything is quite easy to snap on and off, aided by small metal buttons.*I always love figures that come with a base and Batgirl's is quite sturdy. It comes in two pieces, a heavy round black base and a long metal rod with a clip to hold Batgirl, and is required for her to stand. It isn't flash, but it gets the job done and looks nice and neutral.*The articulation on the body is surprisingly good. I wasn't sure what to expect but Batgirl does have a fairly decent range of joints for a fashion doll. The negatives:*Be careful with the snaps. While they're easy to fasten and unfasten, they feel like they could detach from the fabric with too much use. Definitely not intended for someone who plans on playing dress up all the time.*I'm still not sure how I feel about Batgirl's cowl. It feels like its made of the same material as a latex Halloween mask which. It looks ok on the figure, but feels really weird and I have concerns about it possibly breaking down over time or the paint chipping off.Overall: If you're expecting this figure to be similar to something from Hot Toys or Sideshow collectibles, you're going to be disappointed. Take a look at Tonner dolls. The focus is definitely on fashion and this Batgirl is quite fashionable. It reminds me quite a bit of the old Mego Batgirl. While I can't say that I'm personally drawn to most of Tonner's work, I'm glad that I added their Batgirl to my collection.
