IDEAL 33-864 Tone Generator and Amplifier Probe Kit is a cable tracing kit with advanced new features to give a complete signal tracing solution. The amplifier probe is designed to identify and trace wires or cables within a group without damaging the insulation. The 33-864 features volume control for increased sensitivity and is fully adjustable to suit your work environment. The recessed on/off button prevents battery drain, but if the battery should get low the battery indicator light will flash. The kit includes a Tone Generator No.62-160 Amplifier Probe No.62-164, a Soft Black Nylon Carrying Case, Cable Assemblies, and Flat Tip. In 1916, J. Make sure to get the new revision.

Merchant shipped the old revision 33-864. I asked them about it and they corrected it(Which is sweet). The new revision is grey and has an F-Type Female for tracing coax.

tone generator

The sensor probe is not as sensitive as I had hoped for but it still does the job of locating wiring behind sheetrock. It also does a very good job as a continuity checker.

It's a shame tool designers don't actually USE the tools they design

Picked one of these up at Lowes one day because I lost my regular toner made by progressive electronics. I've been a field tech for a little over 15 years and I noticed two things I didn't like immediately. The toner has no strap with which to hang the toner; I had to find a surface to set the toner on within a distance that the leads would reach. This is often not possible. Secondly the idea of having to unplug the alligator clip leads to plug in the little rj11 patch cord was somewhat inconvenient (lost it within a week, so it's not really an issue anymore, but really, why not just build in both?). Also, I discovered later, while working on a rather long leg of cable (several thousand feet) the tone doesn't carry very far. Looking over the instructions out of curiosity, they suggest to ground one side of the pair for a stronger tone. This is fine for locating a line in a wall, but imagine trying to isolate one pair out of several hundred! The cable would be hemorrhaging tone! Also in the insructions (now I'm just getting picky) they referred to the ring side as negative and tip as positive. This toner might be fine for home use, but rather impractical for field work.
