20 years of Marathon: To celebrate its anniversary, Bohle has treated its legendary, long distance runner to a full makeover. Inside and out the fourth generation of the Marathon incorporates the very latest in tyre technology. The Marathon is Europes biggest selling tyre. And in the bicycle business it is one of only very few everyday tyres that is specifically asked for by name. "Such a firmly established, market top seller as the Marathon, needs to be updated and modernised from time to time in order to incorporate the latest trends in tyre technology", said Holger Jahn, joint managing director of Bohle. "20 years ago it was the first high-tech tyre developed for everyday cyclists - and hence a revolution. After many years of continual technical advancement this years bead-to-bead remake now reflects the highest achievable technical standards possible". Refreshed and technically revised, Bohles classic tyre is aimed at the whole European market. But in relation to German market conditions the tyre should be arriving at a difficult time, as the specialised trade is experiencing a general decline in the ready market for high-quality parts and tyres. Yet despite the poor economic climate many German bicycle dealers are experiencing at least stable and more often rising sales of Marathon, Marathon Plus and Marathon XR. Since the launch of the third generation Marathon in 1999, Bohle is now ready to offer the specialised trade a new version of its proven top product incorporati

A pain to put on, but legendary durability
By Jeff
These tires are expensive, heavy, and are an absolute pain in the butt to put on. Woe unto the person who gets a flat and has to patch their tube on the side of the road! However, they're heavy because they have a thick, protective layer between the tread and the casing, and thick, strong sidewalls. Theoretically, the protective strip prevents most flats from occurring, and the strong sidewall is an absolute necessity for touring.Additionally, I will say that these don't handle all that well. While not at all dangerous, they feel slightly squirrelly and less confidence inspiring than the Michelin City tires I had. This is likely due to the tread blocks. But hey, if you're touring, what's more important, squeezing every mile per hour out of that downhill curve, or not ending up stranded on the side of the road with a blown-out sidewall? Because the smooth-rolling Michelin City tires left me stranded.

Good tire but not perfect
By George Blaszczynski
Overall I like these tires - they are quiet, rugged, and seem to have low rolling resistence, BUT I fried one and another one cracked. In my case, these tires are on a tandem bicyle on which my wife and I do fully-loaded self-guided tours - the toughest conditions one can impose on bicycle tires. We usually exceed the 100 kg weight specification, having two people on a heavy steel bike with about 80 lb of luggage. One day we were coming down from the Blue Ridge Parkway and I let the rim get too hot (I have rim brakes) and this caused a buldge to develop near the rim. The tire was fried, but we made it home, albeit carefully and slowly. My bigger concern is with a crack that developed on another tire. That crack is in its outer shell and goes perpendicular to the threat - it's like if someone sliced the tire with a knife. But it held. I had much worse luck with other tires (I always cary a folding spare). Regarding the ease of putting them on, I think they are average for wire beaded tires - just remember to have the bead of the tire exectly in the center of the rim everywhere except of course where you're trying to flip the bead onto the rim - this will give you the extra slack you need. Also, after the tire is on, inflate the tire first to only a few psi and then with your hands go around the tire while rolling the tire in both direction as though you were trying to take it off, allowing the bead to settle evenly on the rim.
